Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney Liberal Democrats have selected well-known, local campaigner Amy Kitcher to be their prospective Parliamentary Candidate.Amy, 26, contested the seat in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections and secured the largest swing of any political party in Wales; a massive 15.8% from Labour to Liberal Democrat.
Amy said, "I am delighted to have been chosen to stand for Parliament and want to thank the members for their support.
"After almost 100 years of Labour rule, our community suffers some of the worst health and deprivation in Europe. Merthyr needs a strong voice at Westminster, not another Labour 'yes man'.
"As a resident of Merthyr I know only too well the problems that face our community. The people I speak to tell me that they are tired of being taken for granted by Labour year after year and that they are looking for a change."
An active Liberal Democrat campaigner, Amy also fought the 2006 Blaenau Gwent by-election and is well-known amongst the Welsh Lib Dems for proposing unusual policy motions at Welsh Conference.
Amy, who works for a national Domestic Abuse charity, is buying a house in Merthyr Tydfil with her fiancé and fellow Lib Dem, Kevin O'Connor. Amy is proud that her roots are planted firmly planted in Merthyr Tydfil, having been brought up and educated in the town.
