International Women's Day

March 8, 2010 9:00 AM

International Women's Day is always celebrated on the 8th March and is a global day celebrating all the political, economic and social achievements of women past, present and future.

The first one took place in 1911, which was time of expansion in the modern world, and saw a rise of many ideologies and revolutions.

Today, International Women's Day is a global event, taken on a much larger scale. The day is an official holiday in many parts of the world, with many traditions surrounding it, some even similar to Mothers Day.

Throughout history, there have been significant changes in thoughts about women's roles in society and their equality, from feminists of the 1970's to more women being visible in the working world today. But despite this, women have not gained full equality. Many women are paid less than men and are not equal in numbers in terms of politics or business.

The role of IWD is to remind people about all the negatives as well as celebrate the positives, as many improvements have been made.

Thousands of events are being held worldwide to celebrate women's achievements, such as political rallies to fashion parades. It is also really good to see that major corporations playing a part, with Google occasionally changing their logo on the day. Even more so, the United States allocated the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.

The United Nation gives a theme to each IWD and the theme for this year is 'Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all'.
